Breathing is an intrinsic part of life, from our first cry to our final moments. Having witnessed the last breaths of two individuals, I’ve been profoundly reminded of the preciousness of this simple act—a vital yet often overlooked gift. This experience deepened my appreciation for breath and inspired me to explore breathwork, not just as a practice to sustain life but as a powerful tool for regulation and personal growth.

Breathwork involves intentionally changing your breathing pattern to significantly influence your physical and mental state. Techniques vary from energizing breaths like Kapalabhati (Breath of Fire) to calming methods like the 4-7-8 technique. Each method holds the potential to profoundly impact our well-being.

One of the most compelling aspects of breathwork is its immediate impact on our well-being. In moments of stress or anxiety, our breathing often becomes shallow and rapid. However, we can activate the body’s parasympathetic system by consciously slowing and deepening our breaths. This physiological shift reduces heart rate and blood pressure and offers instant relief from stress and anxiety.

Breathwork has been an incredible tool for reconnecting me with my body. In moments of conscious breathing, I feel more present, grounded, and truly embodied—a necessary antidote to the disconnection that can arise from too much thinking and scrolling through digital life.

While many breathwork practices focus on relaxation, others, like the Breath of Fire, are designed to energize and revitalize. These techniques increase oxygen levels in the blood and boost energy and alertness. They provide a natural alternative to caffeine and other stimulants, perfect for when I need a quick surge of vitality.

Breathwork can also serve as a profound bridge to the subconscious mind. In deeper, more meditative sessions, I’ve accessed thoughts, emotions, and realizations that usually lie beneath the surface of my everyday awareness. These sessions often lead to profound breakthroughs and emotional releases, enhancing my self-understanding and helping me navigate personal challenges more effectively.

If you’re new to breathwork, I encourage you to start with this simple exercise:

Sit in a comfortable position with your back straight.

  • Close your eyes and observe your natural breathing pattern for a few moments.

  • Slowly inhale through your nose for a count of four, hold your breath for a count of seven, and exhale through your mouth for a count of eight.

  • Repeat this cycle four times.
