This is not about children standing up for themselves but rather eliminating the need to do just that. There should be no need to stand up for yourself because there should be no bulling...period.

As a mom of 7 children I've seen bullying to what I feel was the extreme. I feel it starts at home and if we don't live by example bullying will never stop. The schools claim a zero tolerance to bullying. When they try to hide it from a parent I feel they are just as responsible as the bully. When my daughter entered Jr High at sixth grade she had dealt with bullying from kindergarten due to being very thin. Can you imagine 6 years old calling a classmate anorexic? Where could that of come from? My daughter broke down in sixth grade to the point we had to home school her. One day I get a call telling me that in one of her prior classes a note inviting classmates to my daughters funeral was passed through out the class! Had I not been told of this the school would never had informed us of it. I called the teacher and he validated it and that he had a class of girls sobbing thing my daughter was dead! I could write a book on what bullying has caused my children to the point of causing severe anxiety panic disorder that my husband and I had to take care of and try to keep our children safe from bullying. The schools position if they don't see it it doesn't happen even if your child went to school healthy and happy and after recess were in the ER from a dislocated shoulder caused by a classmate. I was told it wasn't seen so their off the hook! In both situations nothing was done. What's a parent to do when even the adults look the other way?

I am appalled at the billboards in Georgia that are designed to shame parents of chubby kids into putting those kids on diets. Just what the world needs - parents with an unhealthy relationship with food perpetuating that disease. The damage these billboards WILL create is unforgivable and nothing short of bullying. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/02/georgia-...

Why can't we just be happy for someone who is happy?

I feel that bullying is a problem that need more of an umbrella approach. Children who bully are often the product of parents who don't teach their children better and often bullying is a symptom of unhappiness or powerlessness. To truly combat bullying it has to involve adult educatio and involvement to. If I had the ability that's the kind of program I would set up.

Thanks so much! I am very impressed with your speedy and considerate response. So many bullying videos online now with lousy or no captioning. It's ironic that many anti-bully posters don't seem to feel its worth the time to include Deaf folks in the discussion. It's great to see you're talking the talk AND walking the walk. Big smiles. Thank you very much - very, very much appreciated!!

Im really happy there are new rules! My 7 year old son was being bullied on the bus by 4 boys who were 3 grades older for no reason. They went as far as ripping his bookbag off him. He came to me and i went to the principle and there hasnt been a problem since! Thank God! I just hope it doesnt ever happen again! we need to scare the kids and make them realize there will be nothing but problems if you bully!!! Its a terrible thing!

Knol: I think that I already made that point, and agreed that this is indeed different from the kind of bullying people experienced 15 or 20 years ago and that it's harder to avoid. I also, for the record, remember taking long circuitous routes home through side streets and back alleys in order to avoid kids who wanted to beat me up after school - well off of school property where nothing could be done. So let's not get too out of control about all this. If bullies want to bully someone then they're going to do it, the how's, where's and why's are simply variations on a theme. The ONLY point I've been trying to make is that bullying has always existed, hardly anyone has NOT been bullied as a child (or an adult) and although technology has definitely made it easier to bully and to do so more frequently, with relative anonymity, let's not go off half-cocked and suggest that every text message and every instance of harassment is necessarily "bullying" or deserving of police intervention. I'm sure that many are. I'm sure that it's much different than when I was starting high school in the 80's. But let's also remember that there were almost NO gay role models in public at that time. That there were NO openly gay teachers or police or firemen or sport heros or movie stars and that AIDS was just beginning to show up. Misinformation, fear, prejudice, outright hatred and discrimination where EVERYWHERE and there were almost NO safe, positive spaces, let alone anyone in authority to turn to for help. So let's also not pretend that just because we weren't getting texts on our cells that somehow we had it "easier" than kids who are being bullied today. I simply don't accept that as "fact". And saying that doesn't minimize or discount your experiences by the way, I'm simply pointing out that there's a lot of hype around this topic and that while everyone's running around saying "oh how awful, it's an epidemic" maybe we should slow down, stop and think and not simply be reactionary by allowing the media and wider "visibility" fool us into believing that there's actually an increase in the amount of bullying that's taking place. (Maybe there is, I haven't seen any statistics to support this assertion however.) Bullying has always existed as long as humans have been around. I for one am not about to concede that it's suddenly a major, widespread and much more serious problem for today's generation simply because we have access to cell phones and computers. Awareness needs to occur, kids need to be told how to behave and how to deal with it when it happens. Parents and teachers need to be more aware, do more to monitor their kids' online activities and where abuses occur, react swiftly and definitively. I just think that there's a lot of noise being made about bullying and bullies these days like it's suddenly something new on the scene that no one has ever dealt with before and suddenly kids are being pushed into their graves by the dozens because of cyber and real life bullying. I'm just asking, is it possible that something that we've done (or not done) has made these kids more susceptible or less able to cope with bullying, just as technology has made it easier for bullies to have access to their victims? Human beings, countries, cultures and societies have survived much worse than harassing emails, taunts and threats - I'm pretty sure that many Holocaust survivors would agree with me on that point! So let's not get our panties in a bunch and suggest that bullying is the modern scourge that it's being made out to be. If people can survive wars, massacres, State-initiated genocides and other horrors, you'll just have to forgive me for not completely losing my mind along with everyone else because some kids are being bullied and some unfortunate kids are committing suicide because of it. Is that a HUGE problem? Absolutely! No question. Are the bullies 100% completely and solely responsible for this phenomena and the subsequent actions of their victims? I'm not quite so sure. So before we enact Zero Tolerance laws in every school, jail everyone who sends a text or throws a spit ball or makes a fat joke and ruin people's lives by charging them with Hate Crimes, maybe, just maybe, we should all take a breath, step back and reassess and CONSIDER for a moment if it's fair to lay all the blame and responsibility completely at the feet of only the bullies. Nothing happens in a vacuum and I don't hear anyone even suggesting that there might be other factors at work here. Everyone's too damned quick to blame the bullies and stop looking for any other causes. THAT is my point.

Yes- there is/was a meme floating around the 'net about how those of us of a certain age rode bicycles without helmets, rode in cars without airbags (and, for some, without seat belts) etc etc.I do believe that using 'anti-microbial soaps' with pre-teens is actually harming them; short-circuiting their immune system's ability to develop anti-bodies. Which is not to say that all such safety developments are bad; but some moderation would be good.

As you note (and Knol emphasizes in their response) there are some huge differences in modern bullying. And I agree with you that claims of victimization are becoming like the proverbial boy who cries 'Wolf!"
